Brims Construction was appointed in September 2009 by Bouygues Travaux Publics to design and construct the South Extract Building for the new Tyne Tunnel Crossing. The New Tyne Crossing project was initiated and promoted by the Tyne and Wear Integrated Transport Authority (TWITA). A complete design and build solution was offered by Brims on the project and working with our structural engineer we were able to offer an efficient design for Bouygues. The building is designed to extract fumes from the new tunnel construction and also provides fire suppression facilities. The South Extract Building is a concrete frame construction and is clad with pre-finished forticrete blockwork and curtain walling. A multi level construction was designed to accommodate the client’s needs allowing them to undertake their own mechanical and electrical fit out after completion of construction activities. A full external works scheme including drainage and a large reinforced concrete civil engineering groundwork scheme was also undertaken using our own locally based labour.
