The Toffee Factory Development

Brims Construction was appointed as Principal Contractor for the complete design and construction of the new build and refurbishment of the Toffee Factory Development and associated landscaping works on Newcastle’s Quayside. Built in the 1870s, The Toffee Factory has a captivating and colourful history with previous building uses such as a cattle sanatorium, a lard warehouse, and latterly a sweet factory from which its modern day name derives. The project involved the complete upgrade, refurbishment and remodelling of a historic building that had been damaged by fire over two decades ago and left to fall into a state of dereliction. The original building fabric has been restored, including the distinctive chimney and an additional floor has been added. The works also included an extensive external works package which comprised earthworks, retaining structures, land remediation and treatment of shallow mine workings.
