Brims Construction was appointed as Principal Contractor for the construction of a major new student accommodation complex in the Upper Ouseburn area of Newcastle’s student quarter. The works briefly comprise the design and construction of three new accommodation blocks, each being 4-5 storeys high, providing 266 individual accommodation units. The site was formerly occupied by two, single-storey steel clad buildings which were used as joiner shops. Due to the nature of the site a substantial groundworks scheme was undertaken which included extensive piling and substantial reinforced concrete ground beams. The building is a traditional masonry build with block and beam flooring. The external envelope is a mixture of blockwork, brickwork, render and cladding to the upper levels.
