Brims Construction were appointed as Principal Contractor in April 2021 by T.J. Morris to undertake the design and construction of a new Home Bargains retail store on the Northeast Quarter of Ashington. The site is adjacent to the leisure centre and library facility and is one of remaining sites within the overall masterplan redevelopment area. It also benefits from the recently completed townscape infrastructure works and will complement the other recently completed and currently proposed elements
of the masterplan .
The scheme involved the construction of a Home Bargains retail unit with a 20,000sq.ft floor area together with associated alterations and improvements to the site access/pedestrian crossing, as well as a new car park, servicing and external works. The development includes several design features that deliver a high-quality building in this prominent location. During the design process, certain key features were identified and developed into the proposals -the scale and aesthetic of the building will complement the surrounding area, in particular the recent masterplan projects.
The development has been designed in accordance with Local plan policies and includes a number of
design features that will deliver a high-quality building in this prominent location.
Key features:
• focal points of the buildings will be the store entrance, facing Portland Way
• areas of glazing and other external materials add interest and define zones
• active frontages are created by visual and actual activity, together with points of interest
• high quality, sustainable materials and detailing are proposed from a modern palette
High quality external finishes are utilised for the development for the main public realm. Paving to complement the existing streetscape finishes used to tie in the development and define the
pedestrian routes from Portland Way and also to the southern boundary from the town centre direction,
as well as the main pedestrian areas around the building.
