Brims were appointed to deliver the construction of a new Home Bargains retail unit at Grangetown, Sunderland. The project transformed a former brownfield reservoir site into a modern retail development, providing a purpose-built shell complete with supporting infrastructure and external works to facilitate the client’s continued expansion across the North-East.
Working under a Design & Build contract, our team managed every stage of the construction process, coordinating specialist subcontractors, consultants and suppliers to deliver a high-quality commercial development that met the client’s operational requirements. The project involved the full construction of a new single-storey retail shell together with all associated civil engineering and external works, creating a development ready for the client’s internal fit-out.
Following site establishment, works commenced with the preparation of the brownfield site, including groundworks and the installation of below-ground drainage and service infrastructure. Careful planning was required to coordinate construction activities while managing existing underground services and maintaining safe operations adjacent to neighbouring commercial premises.
The building works included the construction of the substructure and superstructure, followed by the installation of the structural frame, external wall systems and roofing to create a durable, weatherproof retail shell. Throughout the build, close attention was given to quality control, ensuring every stage of construction met the required specifications and industry standards.
Alongside the main building, our team delivered extensive external works, including foul and surface water drainage systems, statutory utility infrastructure, hard landscaping and site infrastructure necessary to support the completed retail development. The coordination of these elements was critical in ensuring the building and surrounding external areas were delivered as an integrated solution.
